Makers de Mayo

Makers de Mayo

“This Cinco de Mayo, spend your day supporting local BIPOC makers at Makers de Mayo: a decolonized market and celebration hosted by Noche Libre and the Portland Mercado.

By now many people have learned that Cinco de Mayo is a celebration honoring the Battle of Puebla, in which Mexican armies defeated the French. However, the celebration came to the United States in the 1960's as a direct result of Chicanx activists seeking to highlight an event representing strength and resilience as the army that overthrew the French were indigenous and far outnumbered, yet still persevered. By the 1980's, however, alcohol corporations capitalized on the event, seeing it as a marketing opportunity to target Latinx communities.

So, this Cinco de Mayo, shop for goods made by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color makers, eat delicious food, and soak in sounds provided by the Noche Libre Latinx DJ collective. “
